- 00:00:00 Hi there, I'm James. I'm the creator of Artemis.
- 00:00:03 Artemis is a calm web reader that updates once per day.
- 00:00:06 With Artemis, you can follow your favourite websites.
- 00:00:09 And stay up to date in one web interface.
- 00:00:12 Artemis runs on desktop on the web.
- 00:00:16 And you can also install it as a progressive web application on your mobile phone.
- 00:00:20 So you can follow along on the go.
- 00:00:22 So the first thing we need to do is add an author to follow.
- 00:00:26 To get started I'll click add an author.
- 00:00:29 And then we're going to get a couple of recommendations of sites where we can go
- 00:00:32 that have lots of different cool blogs.
- 00:00:35 But I've already got one in mind. So I'm going to click add an author.
- 00:00:38 And I'm gonna add a site called Personal Canon.
- 00:00:40 which is a Substack that I really enjoy reading.
- 00:00:43 I'll go back to add author, and then I'll type in their domain name.
- 00:00:46 personalcanon.com.
- 00:00:48 Now I'll click preview.
- 00:00:50 Now Artemis is going to get the feed and show me a preview.
- 00:00:53 And here we can see all the most recent posts in their feed.
- 00:00:56 Starting with the most recent: everything they read in June 2025.
- 00:01:00 Now this looks good to me, but I'm gonna, I'm gonna give this feed a name.
- 00:01:04 So I'm gonna say Personal Canon.
- 00:01:05 Then I'll click Add.
- 00:01:08 And I'm now subscribed to that website.
- 00:01:11 So if I go back to my feed, I can see all the posts from the last fourteen days.
- 00:01:16 That they published on their website.
- 00:01:19 And the reason that we show the last fourteen days
- 00:01:23 Is we want you to have a more peaceful feed.
- 00:01:26 We don't want to show you everything. We don't want there to be a feeling of overwhelm when you read your feed.
- 00:01:31 There is no concept of an unread counter
- 00:01:35 That's tracking how many things that you should read that shows up.
- 00:01:39 There aren't folders. There aren't all these different accoutrements that make a reader feel overwhelming.
- 00:01:46 We have a list of links. And then if you click a link.
- 00:01:49 You go to the website because, honestly, I love just clicking on a link and seeing
- 00:01:54 the website someone has made.
- 00:01:56 Especially if it's a personal blog and somebody's put all that time into designing it.
- 00:02:00 And if your browser supports changing the colour of links if you've clicked on them
- 00:02:06 Then you'll see that here. And if your browser doesn't support that,
- 00:02:09 You can go into your Reader Preferences and you can change many different things.
- 00:02:13 Artemis, by default, is designed to have a simple interface.
- 00:02:16 And there's a couple of different enhancements you can make based on your preferences.
- 00:02:22 So, for example, we can change our theme colour. Let's make it pink. I like pink.
- 00:02:28 We'll make it a bit more pink.
- 00:02:29 Then, let's store the link clicked status so that our link colour is going to change when we click on it.
- 00:02:37 And then let's change the display name that we show
- 00:02:42 From the domain of the site to which you are subscribed to the name that we have set.
- 00:02:46 And then, finally, let's change the message and say "hello".
- 00:02:52 So you can see, our theme is pink, our message has been changed.
- 00:02:56 And if we go to our feed, we can see Personal Canon is now there
- 00:03:00 Rather than the domain name.
- 00:03:01 And when I click a link, and I go back, you can see the colours changed.
- 00:03:07 And this is synchronised across all of your devices
- 00:03:09 So you can keep up to date of when you have clicked things.
- 00:03:12 And this also changes the colour in such a way that it's easier to skim your feeds
- 00:03:16 Where posts that you haven't clicked are a whiter colour
- 00:03:21 And then posts that you have clicked are accented with your chosen colour.
- 00:03:24 Artemis has all the import features you need.
- 00:03:27 You can add an author and import with OPML or a URL list.
- 00:03:33 And those will be synced at the end of the day when all your feeds are downloaded.
- 00:03:38 Another cool thing you can do is follow accounts on the Fediverse.
- 00:03:41 There's this one account I really like, Small Seasons Bot
- 00:03:44 Which publishes a calendar of information about 24 small seasons throughout the year.
- 00:03:52 Let's follow this in Artemis. I will get their handle, which is @smallseasons@mastodon.social.
- 00:03:58 I'll paste that in.
- 00:04:00 When I click preview, I can see a preview of this feed.
- 00:04:05 I will call this one Small Seasons and I will add it to my reader.
- 00:04:11 And I now have Small Seasons in my reader too.
- 00:04:14 We can see their last post on the 21st.
- 00:04:17 When I click on this link, I go to the Mastodon post.
- 00:04:21 You can also follow sites like YouTube.
- 00:04:23 You can follow Ghost websites, WordPress websites, any site that has
- 00:04:27 An RSS feed, an Atom feed, supports ActivityPub, you can follow along in Artemis.
- 00:04:34 In your account settings, you can find many pieces of information.
- 00:04:38 Both settings as well as different ways to log in.
- 00:04:42 You can log in with your domain name.
- 00:04:43 And you can also update what posts are displayed in your reader with keyword filters.
- 00:04:49 For example, let's go back to our home page and let's say we don't want to show the word "attention"
- 00:04:56 in our feed. We can say "hide attention" is our name, and we'll set a filter to "attention".
- 00:05:03 We'll create this keyword filter.
- 00:05:05 Now when I go home, I no longer see that post about attention.
- 00:05:09 This is a great way to, especially for higher volume feeds, filter out, say,
- 00:05:14 Posts that have certain prefixes in their title, or posts that contain keywords that aren't of interest to you.
- 00:05:22 Very much Artemis is designed to be customisable.
- 00:05:25 With that said, I encourage you to play around. Explore. Have fun.
- 00:05:30 If you have any questions, feel free to email me at jamesg@jamesg.blog.
- 00:05:34 I look forward to hearing from you.
- 00:05:37 Thank you so much, and enjoy the software!
